David Ffolkes came to the United States as a set designer with Maurice Evans' Shakespeare company before World War II. When the War broke out, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the British Army and stationed in Singapore. He was captured at the fall of Singapore and spent three years in a Japanese prison camp in Burma, building a railway. After being released, he returned to the United States and taught scene and costume design at Boston College, before becoming the costume designer for Island in the Sun.
